Currently, the School District of Philadelphia provides our school with a nurse two days each week. The nurse administers medicines, completes vision and hearing screenings, provides first aid, and responds to emergency medical situations. Parent volunteers are asked to help out when the nurse is not in our school.
CORA Services provides St. Katherine of Siena School with counseling services in addition to remediation and speech classes. We have access to psychological-educational testing services through CORA and we do consult on a regular basis with a psychologist with regard to placement of children in our school.
About one-third of our children in grades one through eight are bused to school. This is a free service provided through the School District of Philadelphia. There is no provision for busing of Kindergarten students.
Many of our children are driven to school by their parents. Parents are asked to park in the church parking lot and then to walk their children to the school yard. We also have a drop-off lane to expedite this procedure.
Field trips are part of the curriculum and when classes do go out on field trips, buses are chartered. Parents are usually asked to help to chaperone, but are not asked to drive in car pools.
St. Katherine of Siena School provides for a supervised lunch period each day. Paid aides monitor the children while they eat their lunches and while they are outside in the school yard. This permits the teachers to enjoy their thirty-minute lunch period and also provides the children with adult supervision while they are eating and at play. |
